Utility Setup Guide

When you move into your home, you need to set up your utilities as soon as possible. This utility setup guide helps make sure your services stay on and bills are sent to the right person.


This guide explains what you need to do.


What utilities do I need to set up?

You are usually responsible for arranging and paying for:


  • Gas

  • Electricity

  • Water

  • Council Tax

  • Internet and phone


Gas

You can find out who supplies gas to your home by contacting the national gas database.


How to find your gas supplier:



Once you know the supplier, contact them to:


  • Tell them you have moved in

  • Give a meter reading

  • Set up an account in your name


Electricity

Electricity suppliers are linked to the local electricity network.


How to find your electricity supplier:


  • Contact UK Power Networks

  • Phone: 0870 608 1524 (Call charges may apply)


The supplier will ask for:


  • Your address

  • A meter reading

  • Your move-in date


Water

Your water supplier depends on where your home is located.


How to find your water supplier:



Contact the supplier to:


  • Register your name

  • Confirm your move-in date


Water suppliers cannot usually be changed.


Council Tax

You must register for council tax with your local council.


How to find your local council:



Once registered, the council will:


  • Send you a bill

  • Tell you how and when to pay


If you think you may be entitled to a discount or reduction, contact the council directly.


Internet and Phone

Internet and phone services are optional.


If you want these services, you will need to:


  • Choose your own provider

  • Arrange installation yourself


Before signing up, check:


  • Contract length

  • Installation costs

  • Coverage in your area


Important tips

  • Set up utilities as soon as you move in

  • Take meter readings on your first day

  • Keep copies of emails or letters

  • Do not ignore bills or reminders
