Water Leak

Water leaks can cause damage if they are not dealt with quickly. This guide explains what to do if you notice a leak in your home.

Please follow the steps below.

Step 1: Identify the leak

First, try to find where the water is coming from.

Identify the leak
Identify where the leak is coming from.
  • Is it dripping, running, or flooding?

  • Is it coming from a pipe, tap, radiator, ceiling, or appliance?

  • Is the leak small or severe?

Do not touch any electrical items if water is nearby.

Step 2: Contain the leak

Try to stop water spreading and causing damage.

Contain the leak
Use buckets and towels to contain the leak.
  • Place a bucket or bowl under the leak

  • Use towels to soak up water

  • Move personal items away from the water

  • If safe, place plastic sheets to protect floors

This helps reduce damage while waiting for help.

Step 3: Turn off the water (if the leak is severe)

If water is flowing heavily or flooding:

Turn of water supply
Find the main stop tap to turn off the water supply until help can arrive.
  • Turn off the water at the main stop tap

  • The stop tap is usually under the sink or near the front door

Only do this if you feel safe and know where it is.
